Economic Development is changing in the region of Salisbury, North Carolina.

There are 3 particular organizations within the region that are working hard to come up with ways to attract new visitors and new businesses while also adding more jobs. The City Manager whose name is Doug Paris states that the organizations can accomplish a lot individually but through proper collaboration, greater achievements can be accomplished. The three organizations that are working together include the DSI (Downtown Salisbury Inc), EDC (Economic Development Commission) & the TDA (Tourism Development Authorities).

Some of the projects that are being focused on include:

  1. Promoting the events in the downtown region while also focusing on recruiting business and developing properties.
  2. Attracting new restaurants, retailers and stores in the region of Salisbury
  3. Utilizing $40,000 dollars for a variety of business marketing techniques and recruiting hotels

The Mayor of Salisbury has also brought many important leaders together so they could discuss strategies on developing the region. Mayor Woodson believes his role is to recruit and spur more people to Salisbury while also increasing the amount of economic development. A City Councilman whose name is Brian Miller states that people are pulling the “sled in the same direction” which is positive news for Salisbury and its development.

The concept of economic development became important to Salisbury in the year 2006 as leaders got together and cultivated a creative community strategy. Some of the development strategies that are were imposed in 2006 included a study on the arts and culture and a 3 percent tax for each of the hotel rooms. A focus on service based industries helped to develop a creative economy. The brand new economy in Salisbury will focus upon tourism, culture, arts and the business sectors.

Overall, the region of Salisbury is leading the way as they are setting an example of how economic development is important.
